IMPORTANT NOTE:

  • All documents presented must be properly checked by the counter clerk or the person assigned with the responsibility so to ensure consistency of information especially in the case of names and dates of birth. Please consult with a senior officer if ever in doubt.
  • All originals of documents must be returned immediately to applicants upon completion of the registration process.
  • All copies of documents presented are to be retained by the Registration Office.

FOR A CITIZEN OF TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO WHO WAS BORN IN TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO

Original Computerized Birth Certificate (not hand written) obtained from the Registrar General’s Department and COPY of same

An applicant whose name does not appear on the Birth Certificate tendered or the given name does not correspond with that on the Birth Certificate, eg. due to a misspelling of name must provide;

  1. Original of an Affidavit to substantiate any representation.

The applicant must also provide a COPY of the Affidavit and any other supporting documentation.

Married women should produce an :

  • Original Marriage Certificate and a COPY of same

NOTE: If a married woman does not wish to adopt her husband’s surname, a special notation must be made in the General Remarks (Box 35) of the Registration Record.

The marital status is recorded as “married”

An applicant who has changed his or her name other than by Marriage or Divorce must provide;

  • Original Birth Certificate
  • Registered Deed Poll formalizing the change of name.

NOTE: Once a Deed Poll has been executed, any alteration thereafter

requires the production of a new Deed Poll by the Registrant.

A citizen of Trinidad and Tobago who was born in Trinidad and Tobago but who has been out of the country for a considerable period of time is required to produce either:

  • valid Trinidad and Tobago Passport issued in Trinidad and Tobago, or
  • valid Trinidad and Tobago Passport issued outside of the country. In such a case the Passport must bear the stamp of the issuing Embassy, or
  • valid Passport of another country bearing a valid stamp attesting to Trinidad & Tobago citizenship.

It should be noted that only valid Passports are acceptable.

Note:

The same requirements in the foregoing which apply in respect of:

  • Difference of name or other inconsistency on Original Birth Certificate
  • A wife wishing to adopt her husband’s surname, and
  • A change of name by Deed Poll also applies

If a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago has returned to Trinidad and Tobago without a passport, for example as a Deportee, but is in possession of an “Emergency Certificate”, then he is required to present:

  • A COPY of the Emergency Certificate together with;
  • Original Birth Certificate and COPY.

 

In the event that the Deportee does not possess an “Emergency Certificate”, a memorandum requesting the relevant information from the Registration Officer to the Chief Immigration Officer must be prepared and issued to the applicant.

FOR A CITIZEN OF TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO WHO WAS BORN OUTSIDE OF TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO

The documents to be produced are as follows:

  • Original Birth Certificate and COPY

NOTE: If the Birth Certificate is not in the English Language then a duly certified English Translation of it and a Copy of same must also be submitted.

  • Valid Trinidad and Tobago Passport

OR

Valid Passport issued by the country in which the applicant was born. Such Passport must contain the stamp of the Immigration Division of the Trinidad and Tobago, Ministry of National Security attesting to citizenship of Trinidad and Tobago (in accordance with Section 4(1) of the Immigration Act and Section 17 (3) of the Constitution)

Note:

The same requirements in the foregoing which apply in respect of:

  1. Difference of name or other inconsistency on Original Birth Certificate
  2. A wife wishing to adopt her husband’s surname, and
  3. A change of name by Deed Poll also applies here.

REGISTRATION OF ADOPTED PERSONS

Adopted persons must provide:

  • A certified copy of the relevant entry in the Adopted Children’s Register issued by the Register General in lieu of Birth Certificate.
  • A document issued by the Adoption Board of Trinidad and Tobago attesting to citizenship.

FOR A PERSON BORN IN ANOTHER COUNTRY WHO HAS ATTAINED CITIZENSHIP STATUS OF TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO BY REGISTRATION

The documents to be produced are as follows:

  1. Original Birth Certificate and COPY of same.[See Exhibit 7(i)]

NOTE: If the Birth Certificate is not in the English Language then a duly certified English Translation of it and a Copy of same must also be submitted

Appropriate documentation confirming citizenship status of Trinidad and Tobago, i.e. either;

  • a valid Trinidad and Tobago Passport;

OR

  • a valid Passport from another country with citizenship stamp in accordance with Section 4(1) of the Immigration Act and Section 17(3) of the Constitution of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago

OR

  • a Certificate of Registration granted under Section 7(1) of the Citizenship of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago Act

OR

  • an Inter-Commonwealth Caribbean Travel Document with Immigration Department of Trinidad and Tobago Stamp.

Note:

The same requirements in the foregoing which apply in respect of:

  1. Difference of name or other inconsistency on Original Birth Certificate
  2. A wife wishing to adopt her husband’s surname, and
  3. A change of name by Deed Poll also applies here.

FOR A PERSON WHO HAS BECOME A CITIZEN OF TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO BY NATURALISATION

The documents to be produced are as follows:

  1. a) Original Birth Certificate and COPY of same.

NOTE: If the Birth Certificate is not in the English Language then a duly certified English Translation of it and a Copy of same must also be submitted

  1. b) The Original of the Certificate of Naturalization granted under Section 12(1)

of the Citizenship of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago Act, Ch. 1:50

and a COPY of same must be provided.

Note:

The same requirements in the foregoing which apply in respect of:

  1. Difference of name or other inconsistency on Original Birth Certificate
  2. A wife wishing to adopt her husband’s surname, and
  3. A change of name by Deed Poll also applies here.

FOR A PERSON BORN IN ANOTHER COUNTRY WHO HAS ATTAINED RESIDENT STATUS OF TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO

The documents to be produced are as follows:

  1. Original Birth Certificate and COPY of same.

NOTE: If the Birth Certificate is not in the English Language then a duly certified English Translation of it and a Copy of same must also be submitted

  1. b) Appropriate documentation confirming resident status of Trinidad and

Tobago, i.e. either;

  • a valid Passport containing the stamp of Immigration Division of Trinidad and Tobago under Section 4(2) or 5(1) of the Immigration Act;

OR

  • a Certificate of Registration as a Resident of Trinidad and Tobago, in accordance with Sections 5, 6 and Section 4(2) of the Immigration Act, Ch.18:01

OR

  • an Inter- Commonwealth Caribbean Travel Document with Immigration Department of Trinidad and Tobago Stamp or in accordance with Section 18 of the Constitution of Trinidad and Tobago.
